The Insignificance of Statistical Significance Testing
نویسنده
چکیده
Despite their wide use in scientific journals such as The Journal of Wildlife Management, statistical hypothesis tests add very little value to the products of research. Indeed, they frequently confuse the interprettation of data. This paper describes how statistical hypothesis tests are often viewed, and then contrasts that interpretation with the correct one. I discuss the arbitrariness of P-values, conclusions that the null hypothesis is true, power analysis, and distinctions between statistical and biological significance. Statistical hypothesis testing, in which the null hypothesis about the properties of a population is almost always known a priori to be false, is contrasted with scientific hypothesis testing, which examines a credible null hypothesis about phenomena in nature. More meaningful alternatives are briefly outlined, including estimation and confidence intervals for determining the importance of factors, decision theory for guiding actions in the face of uncertainty, and Bayesian approaches to hypothesis testing and other statistical practices. This lecture is intended to serve as an introduction to Information Retrieval (IR) effectiveness metrics and their usage in IR experiments using test collections. Evaluation metrics are important because they are inexpensive tools for monitoring technological advances. This lecture covers a wide variety of IR metrics (except for those designed for XML retrieval, as there is a separature lecture...
متن کاملOur Cosmic Insignificance
The universe that surrounds us is vast, and we are so very small. When we reflect on the vastness of the universe, our humdrum cosmic location, and the inevitable future demise of humanity, our lives can seem utterly insignificant. Many philosophers assume that such worries about our significance reflect a banal metaethical confusion. They dismiss the very idea of cosmic significance. This, I a...
متن کاملWhat’s the Alternative?: An Equivalence Approach to Balance and Placebo Tests
The rise of design based inference has led to the expectation that scholars justify their research designs by testing the plausibility of their causal identification assumptions, often through balance and placebo tests. Yet some methodologists have severely criticized the current status quo of relying on hypothesis tests to assess balance on pre-treatment covariates and placebo outcomes because...
متن کاملNon-Inferiority Logrank Tests
Individuals are recruited during an accrual period of R years (or months or days). They are followed for an additional period of time until a total of T years is reached. Hence, the follow-up period is T-R years. At the end of the study, the non-inferiority logrank test is conducted at significance level α with power 1− β . Under the proportion hazards assumption, the hazard ratio HR = h2 / h1 ...
متن کاملStatistical Investigation and Comparative Assessment of the Non-Performing Assets of Indian Commercial Banks
Non-performing assets (NPAs) have been a major cause of concern for Indian commercial banks in the recent past years. Many studies have been reported on the different aspects of NPAs in Indian banking system. However, there is a crucial lack of investigation on the comparative assessment of various types of banks such as Public sector banks, Private sector banks and foreign banks so that the tr...
